Feeding Families for Thanksgiving

Feeding families for Thanksgiving is no small feat. It takes the help of the community to gather, sort, and deliver food. Every year, the Fit and Food Connection feeds families in need for Thanksgiving. This past weekend, we delivered holiday meals to 40 families in the Northern St. Louis area.

The Fit and Food Connection’s Food Assistance program provides healthy food to low income families regularly. We provide non-perishables, pre-packaged meals, and fresh fruits and vegetables to families in need on a weekly basis. We strive to provide all of our families in need with meals for the holiday as well. Although many organizations host holiday food drives, the Fit and Food Connection always focuses on the nutritional value of the foods that we provide. We believe that everyone should have access to fresh, nutritious foods.

Our holiday food assistance was possible thanks to the support of those in our communities. Several companies participated in food drives and made donations to provide our organization with enough healthy food to feed 40 families this year. Our partners Urban Harvest and Fit Flavors provided us with donations to feed those in need. Several volunteers helped their place of work host food drives, which also contributed to these meals. The Fit and Food Connection purchased a turkey for each family, and we were able to provide fresh produce from our Organic Food Garden.

Our organization runs on the help of volunteers. On Saturday morning, volunteers gathered to divide the food between the 40 families. On Sunday, more volunteers spent their afternoons delivering the food packages to the families in need. Each family received four bags of food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, non-perishables, and a Thanksgiving turkey.

This year, we were able to provide Thanksgiving meals for 40 families, which is an increase over previous years. Next year, we hope to increase the number of families that we serve again.
