The Importance of Fiber

Cassie Zehenny

What is Fiber?

● Fiber is the part of plant foods that our bodies can’t absorb or digest. It’s broken down into two kinds: soluble (dissolves in water) and insoluble (doesn’t dissolve in water)

Reasons Fiber is Important

● Prevents constipation by helping foods move through your digestive tract smoothly

● Lowers cholesterol by binding to your “bad” cholesterol which prevents it from entering the

bloodstream

● Decreases risk of diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers

● Contributes to higher levels of satiety which can causes you to feel full longer with less

How to Incorporate More Fiber

Fiber is most commonly found in vegetables, fruits, and legumes. There are many easy and delicious ways to add more fiber to your diet:

● Include something green in everything you eat. For example, if you’re having a sandwich, add spinach or kale to it ● Try adding beans or lentils to your soups ● Instead of oatmeal, try lentils in the morning ● In dishes with meat, try using half meat and half beans ● Include a side of vegetables at every meal- broccoli, cauliflower, or brussel sprouts are a great place to start ● Snack on vegetables with hummus- both are full of great fiber
