Warmer weather, budding flowers, and spring cleaning- each of these things has the potential to greatly lift our spirits when March and April roll around each year. However, the only one of these that we can control is spring cleaning, and luckily, according to author and happiness expert, Gretchen Rubin, spring cleaning can have even more of a positive impact on our lives that we realize. So much so that she has even written a book on it – “Outer Order, Inner Calm”. This book is all about the idea that if our environment around us is clean and organized, then our minds are more likely to be calm and in return, we will experience less stress. In the scheme of things, your messy desk or crowded closet may not seem like a big priority, but in her research Gretchen Rubin has discovered that gaining more control of our things makes us feel more in control of our lives. By getting rid of the things that are not useful or needed to us, we are able to free our minds for what truly matters.
